BEHIND THE RED BRICK WALLA visit to Chapter & Verse, by Marlene and Clive[Reproduced with permission from the Magazine for the Parish of St Paul's Harlow Town Centre and St Mary's Little Parndon. December 2001 / January 2002.] If you have never visited Chapter & Verse in Sawbridgeworth you are missing a treat ! I had heard about it of course both at Church and in the Welcome sheet, but visiting there was something we could do 'sometime' .... Then, on our way to somewhere entirely different my husband and I viewed bad traffic up ahead and decided to do a U-turn and head on over to 'Sawbo' (as it is called by local residents). This is somewhere we usually drive through, and not actually visit, so it was a pleasure to explore the nooks and crannies of the old streets. The little shops are reminiscent of the shops of our childhood when mums used to stand on the street corner with a shopping basket over her arm nattering to an old friend. An old car in the street was being filled up with bridesmaids and a joyful expectant bride peeped out of the bedroom window eyes brimming with happiness. We decided to take the opportunity to find Chapter & Verse and asked some locals, but no one seemed to know where it was. (Of course now in hindsight we could have spoken to our Church Librarian, a member of our own church family who runs our church bookstall). We had almost given up hope when we wandered back to Bell Street on the way to get the car when Clive saw it at last. There it was tucked away behind a high red brick wall. We went inside and an Aladin's Cave of wonderful Christian things opened up before our stunned eyes. Bibles, books, candles, calendars, and so much more, I can't begin to tell you ... what an amazing place ! So if you have never visited, just go straight to the main car park, turn right into Bell Street, and it is just a few short minutes down the street on the left hand side - do go ! Remember the red brick wall and you can't miss it. With Christmas coming, you'll have plenty to choose from in the shop and if you have any questions the staff in the shop are only too happy to help. Our Librarian has also said that she too would be glad to answer your questions or even get the goods on your behalf, and you never know, we may even have them on sale at the back of St. Paul's Church.
